About this site

Millions of documents are stranded in formats whose programs died decades ago — ClarisWorks school reports, WordPerfect legal files, MacWrite letters. The words are still in there; the software to read them is gone. This site gets them out.

How it works

The Document Liberation Project — the team whose format filters power LibreOffice — has spent years reverse-engineering these dead formats. We compiled their libraries (libmwaw, libwpd, libwps) to WebAssembly so they run directly in your browser. When you drop a file here, it is read, identified, and converted entirely on your own device. There is no server to upload to: this site is static pages. You can load it, go offline, and it still works.

That matters because these files are usually personal — family letters, manuscripts, business records from an estate. They shouldn't have to pass through a stranger's computer to become readable again.

Full library credits are on the attribution page. Questions, or a format you need that we don't cover? Email james.meyers919@gmail.com (please describe the file — don't send the file itself).
